Dirty Paws and Fat Tire

We had intended on doing some climbing in North Carolina, only I succeeded in dislocating my thumb temporarily. We figured, instead, we’d do some backpacking, give it some time to heal.

We packed up enough food/clothing/supplies to be out in the boonies for at least a few days.

The Piscah National Forest is beautiful. We got an awesome view of Looking Glass, where we climbed a couple years back last time we were in Asheville.

We worked our way into Shining Rock Wilderness on the Art Loeb Trail. We had hoped to make it as far as Cold Mountain. Yes, Cold Mountain, where the novel and film are based from. I’d heard rumors Jude Law was buried up there. It’s been awhile since I’ve hiked with 50 lbs. on my back. Dave’s probably used to the weight on his back, seeing that I force him to carry me around koala bear style (marsupial, to be exact).

Looking Glass

We had gotten around seven miles in when we heard there was some foul weather headed our way, so we figured we’d make camp. Amazingly, we received cell reception from this remote area. You’d never get cell service like this in the west. Hell, I can’t even get it at my dad’s house in rural Arizona. I like that. I don’t like having cell service when I’m in the woods. Just seems wrong.

We discussed the possibility of ‘Mitt Ronmeying’ her (for those of you who don’t know what that is, see: Dog on Roof of Car – amazingly, I got this story from FOX News. Who would have thought I’d ever reference that?). We figured we should let her ride in the cab, though- just in case we run for any kind of political office in the future.
This neck of the country is beautiful. North Carolina is a gem on the east coast. Go get lost in Shining Rock and tell Jude Law I said hi.
